Kimo's

Outstanding Food, Gorgeous Location ...

“Dare to Find a New Favorite!”

Kimo’s has long been one of our most favorite restaurants to while away a lazy afternoon lunch and the Mai Tais still rate as “Best on Island” in our book.

So Good, it “Broke da Mouth!” as the locals say around here. The welcoming oceanfront patio setting is hard to beat and the Mai Tais still rate as “Best on the Island” in our book. The only drawback we have found is that you must be seated by 3 pm to enjoy the lunch entrees, or you are stuck with a minimal appetizer menu to accompany your drinks. We have tried a couple of appetizers and we have decided we love Kimo’s for lunch, not for their starters. For instance, the smoked Marlin’s horseradish sauce had a nice kick and the fish was quite fresh, however, it was just a bit too dry for our liking, and for the price, we just would not order it again. The same would go for the ahi sashimi, it was incredibly fresh, but the small portion and higher price leads us always to make sure we get there by 3pm or seek out a different venue to satisfy our hunger.

Today we arrived at 2pm and ventured out, in the spirit of an honest review, and I can’t tell you how glad we did! Now, in the past, you could not drag us away from the tremendous Caesar salad topped with the fresh fish of the day- often our most favorite fresh fish, ono, is on the menu. We prefer it Cajun style since we always like it hot, but my mother had it done in a lemon butter sauce and loved it just the same. Today I ventured out and tried the Fish Tacos… what else can I say but, WOW! I have NEVER had such a good fish taco, ever… Let’s begin with the size of the fish wrapped inside a tasty gourmet tortilla- HUGE! Usually you think tacos means small chunks of fish overwhelmed with cheeses and toppings. No, this was a dinner size piece of fish laid upon the most delicious mix of aioli, fresh pineapple chunks and sumptuous taco seasonings. Again, we prefer it hot, so I did order the fish Cajun upon our server, Tori’s, suggestion. This oversized and unique taco was served with a side Caesar salad, and as you can guess, we think Kimo’s Caesar is special. They use very fresh parmesan and an authentic dressing like you would imagine a perfect Caesar should taste like. Sometimes I will order the dressing on the side because we have noticed they can get overzealous in the kitchen from time to time.

My husband ordered the Coconut encrusted fresh island fish with peanut sauce and tropical pineapple salsa. He commented that it was “most interesting- and for those whom are adventurous”. I had to agree, at first taste, the peanut and coconut was an unusual taste, not hitting a familiar ‘delicious’ chord. But he did find that he enjoyed it very much as he continued through the meal, finding the salsa refreshing and quite lively. However, we both agreed that we have a new favorite you might not break us away from again, in the fish taco!! It just paled all our other favorite Mexican spots with its outrageous style! (And believe me, we LOVE Mexican!)

Drinks:

As for seeking new shores on the tropical drink front, well, we decided to try the “Tropical Itch” made of passion fruit juice, orange Curacao, vodka and a mixture of rums. Although we found it very delicious and refreshing, we both did believe we would order their magnificent Mai Tais again, every time. Actually the Tropical Itch was so similar to the mixture used in a Mai Tai, we just know we could not again resist the “Real Thing”…
