Hana is a quiet piece of heaven wrapped in natural rugged beauty on the east side of Maui. This beautiful Hawaiian town lies only 50 miles from Kahului, but 32 miles of it include over 600 curves and turns and over 50 one lane bridges. Don't let the ride scare you away though, it is beautiful, an absolutely stunning drive that you'll want to take your time on to enjoy. Just pull over and let others pass as it's a one lane road the whole way.
Near the end of the road lies Hana, with only two vacation accomodation choices in town it's best to have a reservation during high seasons. The Hana Kai is the place the locals choose most often due to it's location right on the ocean and it has large number of affordable rooms. The Hana Kai has two buildings with a total of 17 rental units. Four oceanfront units sit right on the shore of Hana Bay. The views are amazing and you will either love or hate the strong sound of the waves as they crash the black rock beach on that side of the shore.
You can turn around and go back, but we highly recommend at least one night in Hana, but to really experience Hana three days is a minimum. Some will schedule Hana at the beginning of their trip to quickly decompress before hitting the busier higher paced, more traffic, beach and sunset filled South and West sides of the island. It is a bit much though after a long flight to Hawaii so most stay at the end of their trip or break up a mover from West to South sides to enjoy old Maui. Hana gets more rain and clouds than Kihei, Wailea or Lahaina, but they tend to be light and move through. We love the down pours too, but they don't happen as often as you would think.
Rates range from about $167 for a clean, basic garden view studio suite, $225 for a one bedroom oceanview(see 206 for a newly remodeled one with all the extras) to $350 per night for the one bedroom ocean front rooms.
